Participation in DEZIM CONFERENCE 2024

Oct. 11, 2024 Conferences

On October 10, Nataliia Tomenko, deputy director of ARCA took part in roundtable discussion at the DEZIM CONFERENCE 2024 “MIGRATION – CONFLICT – SOLIDARITY. A CONTESTED FIELD BETWEEN POLITICS AND RESEARCH” at the University of Mannheim.

The discussion focuses on the specific challenges faced by Romani refugees from Ukraine in various EU Member States. Roma refugees often experience different forms of antigypsyism, ranging from discrimination at border crossings and daily racism in reception centers to targeted administrative obstacles. Additionally, they are frequently overlooked in general studies on Ukrainian refugees, leading to their marginalization and exclusion from support programs. Hate speech against Romani refugees in media and by politicians further contributes to an anti- Roma, and sometimes broader anti-refugee, atmosphere.

The roundtable presented analyses and (preliminary) research results from several countries to shed light on these issues and discuss possible solutions.

Participants:

• Elżbieta Mirga-Wójtowicz, (Warsaw University,Centre for Migration Research)

• Janush Panchenko, (Zaporizhzhvy National University)

• Nataliia Tomenko, (Agency for the Advocacy of Roma Culture)

• Tobias Neuburger (Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung, Zentralrat Deutscher Sinti und Roma)
