Curator's tour as part of the exhibition “The Invisible. Resilience: The Past and Present of the Rom
On the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Genocide of Roma during World War II, the ARСA Youth Agency for the Advocacy of Roma Culture, together with its partners, presented a thematic exhibition entitled “The Invisible. Resilience: The Past and Present of the Roma.”
A curator's tour by Volodymyr Yakovenko will take place soon as part of the exhibition.
Date: September 5 at 6 p.m.
If you would like to attend the curator's tour, please email us at: communication@arca.org.ua
The exhibition is dedicated to the return of visibility to Roma voices: from persecution during the genocide of Roma during World War II to the current civic activism of Roma in Ukraine.
The exhibition combines archival documents, eyewitness accounts, and contemporary artistic practices. It shows the path from silence to voice, from trauma to strength, from invisibility to presence.
Special attention is paid to the works of contemporary Roma artists who reflect on intergenerational memory and the legacy of trauma. Their works build a bridge between history and the present, forming a new vision of Romani identity and dignity.
The project was implemented in partnership with the Babyn Yar National Historical Memorial Reserve and the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, with the support of the German Embassy in Ukraine and the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.
"This exhibition is extremely valuable for the entire Ukrainian community. It restores the historical memory of the Roma, restores justice, helps to overcome stereotypes and prejudices, and introduces society to contemporary Roma artists, their voices, and their creativity.
Roma are an integral part of Ukraine. They have always shared the same challenges with other peoples of our state. And today, Roma are defending Ukraine from Russian aggression on the front lines and in the rear. The stereotypical image of Roma as beggars or thieves is part of an imperial narrative aimed at humiliating any ethnic group. Our task is to destroy such prejudices and affirm dignity," emphasized Volodymyr Yakovenko, executive director of the ARСA Youth Agency for the Advocacy of Roma Culture.
