23 August – National Flag Day of Ukraine

Aug. 23, 2025 Officially

National Flag Day of Ukraine is a celebration that unites all citizens around one of the strongest symbols of our identity.

For the Roma community, this day also holds special significance. The symbolism of the Roma flag is closely aligned with the Ukrainian one: the blue sky and green earth—just like the blue-and-yellow canvas representing the sky and golden wheat fields.

Today, the Ukrainian and Roma flags are inseparable, even in a literal sense: on the shoulder patches of Roma soldiers defending Ukraine in the ranks of the Armed Forces, both flags are displayed side by side. This is yet another testament to the fact that Roma are an integral part of Ukraine—fighting for freedom and defending the country alongside all Ukrainians.

The Ukrainian flag is not just a combination of colours. It is a symbol the enemy is trying to destroy. They take it down from flagpoles, paint over the blue-and-yellow on roadside signs and buildings, attempting to erase Ukrainian identity from our space—any identity, in fact. And precisely because of this, every display of Ukrainianness becomes even more valuable, and the right to be oneself—unshakable.

Today, Roma together with all Ukrainians honour the national flag as a symbol of strength, dignity, and freedom. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving one’s identity and the shared struggle for a Ukraine that has space for everyone.
